Product Information

Plant this remarkable globe thistle perennial in your garden to produce an impressive performance of bulbous blooms swaying on the summertime breeze.

Through July and August, when we spend most of our time in the garden, bushes of grey-green prickly leaves act as a perfect base for upward stems to emerge, topped with bright blue, spheres of flowers.

These blooms can be examined up-close to see impressive formations of tiny star-like shoots, combining to create flowerheads that each stretch up to 5cm.

‘Taplow Blue’ will look outstanding in next summer’s mixed border display alongside vibrant flowers, such as the bright petals of Begonia 'Apricot Shades', or the pink to purple spikey blooms of Dahlia ‘Blackberry Ripple’.

And don’t forget this – these thistles are magnets for pollinators, sure to attract bees, butterflies, and scores of insects to your garden during the summer, having even been labelled as ‘Plants for Pollinators’ by the RHS.

Supplied as an established plant in 9cm pot, ready for planting.

Top Tips

Deadhead flowers when the blooms are spent to avoid Globe Thistle from self-seeding.

Care Information

  • For best performance, be sure to plant in well-drained soil - poor quality and infertile soil is even best, but rich soil can also be tolerated.
  • Plant in a garden position that will bask in full sun during the summer, although partial-shade can also be tolerated.
  • If you do not deadhead the flowers, the frosts of autumn and winter will do this for you, but self-seeding is possible before.
