You Garden’s plant of the month for March is Lily Oriental Big News
Lilies are without doubt one of the most striking and beautiful summer flowers. Therefore it’s no surprise that the Oriental Lily, ‘Big News’ is YouGarden’s Plant Of The Month this March. Boasting huge and extravagant blooms in flawless, pure white, they have an incredibly rich, heady perfume, this is truly magnificent!
The elegant white buds burst open into upward-facing, perfectly formed blooms with gently arching, wavy petals. Stunning as cut flowers, making for bold, dramatic indoors displays. They also look fabulously decadent when grown in groups in large pots, and of course, perfectly at home in beds and borders. Wherever you decide to plant ‘Big News’ they will be impossible to miss.
Planted in spring or autumn, they’ll return every year, bigger and better. Easy to grow and care for, especially considering the amazing display that they give.

- Give lilies a good mulch to keep the root cool and keep well-watered when in full growth.
Care Guide For Lilies
- Lily bulbs can be planted from autumn right through to the summer and are happily planted both straight into the ground or into containers.
- We supply lots of different varieties so be sure to check the bag they come in for any specific planting instructions.
- In general, lilies are ever so easy to grow and with a sunny spot, frequent watering keeping soil moist (not wet) and a little high potassium fertilizer, you’ll get some fantastic displays.
- Plant in sun or light shade, where they won’t be disturbed.
- Dig a hole for each group at least 8in/20cm deep or 3 x the size of the bulb. Spread a 2in/5cm layer of grit all over the bottom to help drainage. Place your bulb onto the gravel and back-fill with soil.
- Lilies prefer well-drained soil, so on heavy, clay soils which can be too wet, you can grow your lilies in pots, which can then be dropped into borders where you want flowers.
- After the lily blooms, you can also remove just the flower. Do NOT remove leaves until they have died down and turned brown.
