Corydalis ‘Blue Heron’

Corydalis Blue Heron

Corydalis Blue Heron is a plant that we at YouGarden hadn’t even discovered until 2 or 3 years ago and to say it’s an absolute gem is an understatement. It is simply so brilliant that now we cannot imagine not stocking it!

Our Founder Peter McDermott is a huge fan of Blue Heron! And you should be too, as he explains in this video.

And we love it for so many different reasons. The plant features wonderful iridescent blue flowers that add a pop of colour to any bed or border. These Tubular shaped flowers have white throats that serve to emphasis it’s electric blue hues. Their gorgeous red stems sit behind providing further contrast. The lovely Glaucous coating on the green foliage add textural interest to the plant.

All these characteristics come together to produce a truly outstanding variety. And we are very comfortable saying this because it happens to be a regular Chelsea flower show participant. So you’ll see this at various stands almost every year at Chelsea! And no wonder, as the end of may is when these plants really start to shine, blooming in abundance.

Corydalis Blue Heron is a real winter hardy Gem too. Being a perennial plant, it will survive the winter and it’s flowers will return year on year. Best to plant in a shady spot, these plants will establish quickly and require minimal maintenance.

So if you want to grow like the pros and add a really exceptional variety to your garden, get this corydalis planted and you will not regret it! We guarantee it will look fabulous for years and years to come.

Corydalis ‘Blue Heron’ prefers consistently moist soil but not waterlogged conditions. Water the plant regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil evenly moist. Mulching around the plant helps retain moisture and suppresses weed growth.

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth emerges. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended dosage.

Corydalis ‘Blue Heron’ does not require extensive pruning. However, you can trim back the faded flower stalks to promote neater growth and encourage additional blooms. Remove any dead or damaged foliage throughout the growing season.

In colder regions, Corydalis ‘Blue Heron’ may die back to the ground during winter. Mulch the plant with a layer of organic material, such as straw or leaves, to protect the roots from extreme temperatures. Remove the mulch in early spring when new growth emerges.
