Fargesia 'Blue Dragon' Umbrella Bamboo

A unique, new introduction with astounding canes of delicate powder-blue .
  • Newly introduced and with striking powder-blue canes, Blue Dragon has been specifically bred to be non-invasive and to thrive in shady areas of the garden.
  • Perfect in a container where they can be pruned to size, Blue Dragon reaches a height of around 4m which also makes them a great choice for informal hedges or stand-alone specimens.
  • Fargesia is one of the best types of bamboos as it is short and has many small canes, and a much more delicate appearance than the more rampant members of the family.
  • Easy to grow and virtually maintenance free, this is the perfect bamboo for smaller gardens and time strapped gardeners!
  • Supplied in a 5L pot, 1.5m tall (inc. pot), ready to pot on into a larger container or plant out.

Product Information

A new introduction, this compact, dwarfing bamboo, produces masses of new culms (as the canes are called), which emerge a striking powder-blue before turning darker as they mature. A beautiful addition to your garden and bred specifically to be non-invasive and to thrive in shadier conditions.

Bamboos have developed a reputation for thuggish behaviour, but fear not, this newly introduced bamboo is a very well-behaved garden resident. Fargesias do not develop extensive underground rhizomes, but instead form neat, manageable clumps, and Fargesia 'Blue Dragon' is relatively shorter with many smaller canes and a much more refined appearance.

Spectacular in big pots on the patio, and an ideal bamboo for small gardens, the slender, evergreen canes of this clumping Umbrella Bamboo form a beautiful, multi-tonal plant for year-round interest and colour.

Fully winter hardy Blue Dragon' is really easy to grow, just don't let it dry out in hot, dry summers - what could be simpler?

Supplied in a 5L pot, 1.5m tall (inc. pot), ready to pot on into a larger container or plant out, Blue Dragon is great in a large pot or in the garden, where it can even be grown as a dense and easy-care, non-trim hedge, reaching 4mor so over many years.

Top Tips

Best planted in spring so that the food reserves in the rhizome are used to produce a good flush of fresh canes in summer.

Care Information

  • Although bamboos are suitable for planting all year round, they're best planted in spring.
  • Fargesia prefers light to moderate shade so needs to be planted out of the glaring sun.
  • Bamboos are not fussy about soil, tolerating most types, but generally grow best in a well-drained soil in a sheltered spot. If you have a heavy clay soil, it's best to incorporate gravel or grit when planting to improve drainage.
  • Keep plants well-watered during the growing season but don't allow them to stand in water if it's cold.
  • Before planting, dig over the ground and add well-rotted manure or garden compost.
  • Dig a planting hole so that the root ball sits slightly lower, with 2-3cm (1in) of soil covering the original surface.
  • Backfill the hole, taking care not to damage the young roots, then water and mulch.
  • Water regularly and ensure that bamboo plants in containers do not dry out even in winter as the foliage is prone to wind scorch.
  • Give a high nitrogen feed in spring and apply a balanced fertiliser through the rest of the growing season until late August
  • Divide the bamboo every couple of years.
  • In spring, remove any weak, dead, damaged or spindly canes, cutting them to ground level with secateurs or loppers, at the same time remove any debris at the base of clumps.
  • Smaller bamboos are ideal grown in a container at least 45cm (18in) across.
  • In very cold weather, insulate containers with bubble wrap or move them to frost-free conditions.
