Product Information

A compact cherry laurel, ‘Otto Luyken’ forms a thick, compact barrier of shiny, deep green leaves making it ideal for low hedges and groundcover.

If you need low-growing, easy to maintain and evergreen hedging, look no further than a classic Laurel Hedge. Compact and spreading, 'Otto Luyken’ quickly forms a dense canopy of shiny green leaves that looks immaculate all year round.

Easy to grow and maintain, just trim to shape and height twice a year. Suitable for planting all year round as it is pot grown, for the quickest and most successful establishment.

Blooming in March and April, Cherry Laurel produces candles of fragrant, dainty white blossom which in summer is followed by fruits that resemble cherries, turning from red to black as they mature.

Ornamental and evergreen, this perfect little laurel will also grow in shade making it indispensable for many gardens. A great alternative to the traditional box hedge, this slow growing (just 10-20cm/year) laurel is easy to trim and lends itself perfectly to topiary.

Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot, 40cm tall (inc pot), ready for planting out now, plants will reach approx 1m tall x 1.5m wide after 10 years and can be kept under control by clipping.

Easy to grow in any moist but well-drained, moderately fertile soil in sun or partial shade. Its spreading habit makes it useful for low hedges and massed planting. Try clipping it low to create and evergreen laurel ‘lawn’ under specimen shrubs and trees.

Care Information

Planting Advice for your Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken':

  • Grow Cherry Laurel 'Otto Luyken' in well-drained soil in any sunny or partially shaded site (will also grow in full shade).
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare advice for Cherry Laurel 'Otto Luyken':

  • Keep plants well-watered while they establish.
  • Hardy to -15°C, protect from cold winds as it is these that tend to cause the most damage to young plants.

Pruning Advice for Cherry Laurel:

  • Hedges may be trimmed in spring or autumn to keep them tidy and shaped, if pruning at the end of the season (when growth has finished), do it before the onset of very cold weather.
