Product Information

A stunning addition to add to your patio, this pair of fantastic new dwarf Lilacs is just the thing for small gardens or for sprucing up patios and decking areas in a large pot!

Ideal for adding colour, fragrance and a beautiful twist on other Lilac varieties that can often take over your garden, these‘double flowering’, compact lilacs will bloom first in May, flush through summer, then reach a second crescendo of colour in September.

Because Palibin is a dwarf variety of the classic lilac, they won’t take over your beds and borders and will not grow too tall meaning you can really enjoy the beautiful flowers and fragrance with very little maintenance required. A deadheading of faded flowers will keep the lilacs flowering for as long as possible, and there’ll be little to no pruning needed thanks to their dwarf and compact nature.

Slow growing, easy to care for, perfect for pots and very hardy too - why not try growing them as a fragrant flowering hedge for something a little bit different?!

These plants have been skilfully fashioned into an impressive pair of standards by the grower and will make an instant impact in your garden.

Supplied as a pair of grafted 80-100cm tall trees in standard form.

Top Tips

  • Pot-grown shrubs can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not waterlogged or frozen. If in doubt, err towards spring but remember to keep pots well-watered so that the soil does not dry out.

Care Information

  • Grow lilac plants in fertile, well drained soil in full sun.
  • Palibin standards can be grown in containers if you wish using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
  • Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established.
  • Lilac can be pruned in winter or spring by removing any damaged, diseased or misplaced stems before lightly shaping to retain the standard form and height. In mid-summer, faded flowers can be removed from the plants.
  • After pruning, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to the base of the lilac.

To Plant

  • Shrub roots generally tend to spread out rather than down, so dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting, and mix some well rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
