Product Information

Sometimes it’s hard for a plant to live up to its name, but Beautyberry doesn't fail and certainly will not let you down!

An absolute knock-out, Callicarpa is grown for its long-lasting display of metallic-purple, almost jewel-like berries that cling in dense clusters to bare branches between autumn and late winter.

An award-winning plant, this desirable shrub has received both the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and the RHS accolade of a Plant for Pollinators, making it a reliable and wildlife-friendly plant for the garden.

In spring its young foliage is tinged a lovely shade of bronze before turning dark green, while summer interest is provided by a mass of delicate pink flowers. Then, before the berries come into their own, the dark green foliage puts on a fiery show in the autumn, turning golden and red

Excellent grown alongside other shrubs in a sunny or slightly shaded position, this bushy deciduous plant grows to around 3m, but can be kept more compact by pruning.

An absolute garden must-have, plant a few callicarpas together to get a bumper crop of berries!.

Supplied as an established plant in a 3L Pot, plants will grow to approx. 1.8m.

Top Tips

  • Plants require regular watering to produce the best autumn show - drought will mean that not many berries form.
  • Autumn colour is best in full sun.

Care Information

Planting Advice for Callicarpa 'Profusion' Beautyberry:

  • Grow Callicarpa in any fertile, well drained garden soil in full sun or partial shade.
  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Plants benefit from the addition of mycorrhizal fungi to the planting hole and roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare for Callicarpa 'Profusion' Beautyberry:

  • Although callicarpa will tolerate a little lime in the soil, they will suffer from yellowing foliage if there is too much, so you may need to add ericaceous compost if your soil is particularly alkaline.
  • Keep plants well-watered.

Pruning Advice for 'Profusion' Beautyberry:

  • Prune back stems in early spring, if necessary, to remove spindly or damaged growth, cutting back to a permanent framework to maintain shape and size.
  • In autumn stems with berries can be cut for indoor arrangements.
