Product Information

Like many other 'forgotten' plants, alpines are undergoing a well-deserved revival and are some of the most delightful plants that you can grow. There's a plant for every taste, from tiny spring bulbs to miniature trees, and our selection of perennials is the best way to get started on this fascinating hobby.

Robust and hardy in growth, yet charming and often delicate in form, they're really easy to grow and very rewarding, with a gorgeous mix of leaf and flower shape and colour, and in many cases, they need little more than a pot of free-draining compost.

Alpines cope easily with periods of drought as they are used to sporadic or low rainfall, which make them the perfect candidate for eco-friendly gardens and for areas often subject to hosepipe bans!

Plants can be grown in small spaces such as pots and troughs, which simulate the natural rocky areas from which many of them come. This is increasingly important to those of us with small gardens, terraces or balconies.

Easy to grow and low-maintenance, alpines are the perfect plant for new gardeners as you can leave them to their own devices, with the occasional watering if conditions get too dry.

Supplied as 12 plug plants in 6 varieties, ready for you to pot up and grow on before planting out into their final positions.

Top Tips

  • For maximum effect and to enable you to control their watering, alpines are best grown in a trough, or an old Belfast sink, which will let you get up close and personal with their wonderful flowers.
  • Plants don’t like standing in cold, wet soil, so the main thing they need is good drainage, which is easily achieved with a mix of 70% John Innes No.3 and 30% horticultural grit – or a specialist alpine plant mix.
  • If you’re planting in a Belfast sink, tilt it slightly so that any excess water drains out of the plughole and topdress with ornamental gravel to show off your plants.

Care Information

Planting Advice for your alpine plants:

  • Grow on  the plugs in pots of well-draining compost for 4-6 weeks before planting out.
  • If planting in the garden border, spread a 2-inch layer of grit on top of the soil and dig it into the top 6 inches to improve drainage.
  • Dig a hole roughly the same diameter as the pot your alpine is in.
  • Remove your alpine from its pot and tease apart any roots that are spiralling round.
  • Lower the plant into the planting hole and backfill with the original soil, gently firming it around the plant.
  • If you’re growing them in a container, ensure that the container has adequate holes for drainage. Most alpines like a neutral or slightly alkaline soil.
  • Add a well-draining compost mix and plant as above.
  • A layer of coarse gravel on top of the soil will help prevent the neck of the plant getting too damp.
  • Water well.

Aftercare Advice for your alpine plants:

  • Once you’ve planted your alpines, water them thoroughly.
  • Remove or trim any dead leaves in the autumn.
  • Move the container to an area that’s in a ‘rain shadow’ (for example, beneath house eaves) in winter.
